Still Got The Blues – Gary Moore

A Gibson guitar, a Marshall amplifier, and a Jimi Hendrix poster on the wall – every kid’s dream of becoming a rock star. It worked for Gary. They should have buried his guitar next to him, like they should have buried Paganini’s violin next to him. There will be no other human to play them so well. I hope I’m wrong. 🙂

Lyrics:

Used to be so easy to give my heart away
But I found out the hard way
There’s a price you have to pay
I found out that love, was no friend of mine
I should have known time after time

So long, it was so long ago
But I’ve still got the blues for you

Used to be so easy to fall in love again
But I found out the hard way
It’s a road that leads to pain
I found that love, was more than just a game
You’re playin’ to win, but you lose just the same

So long, it was so long ago
But I’ve still got the blues for you

So many years, since I’ve seen your face
But here in my heart, there’s an empty space
Where you used to be

So long, it was so long ago
But I’ve still got the blues for you

Though the days come and go
There is one thing I know
I’ve still got the blues for you

Crossroads – Cream

Eric Clapton’s skill level is probably as close as someone might get to guitar perfection, without crossing into the realm of gods. This is a live performance of Crossroads, and unfortunately the camera concentrates more on the other members of the group. Still, one of my favorite blues video clips.

Lyrics:

I went down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees.
Down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees.
Asked the Lord above for mercy, “Save me if you please.”

I went down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride.
Down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride.
Nobody seemed to know me, everybody passed me by.

Well I’m going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side.
Going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side.
You can still barrelhouse, baby, on the riverside.

Going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side.
Going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side.
You can still barrelhouse, baby, on the riverside.

You can run, you can run, tell my friend-boy, Willie Brown.*
Run, you can run, tell my friend-boy, Willie Brown.*
And I’m staying at the crossroads, believe I’m sinking down.

Manhattan – Sara Bareilles

What better song to listen to, in a full Radio City Music Hall, at an outstanding Sara Bareilles concert. Call it chance, call it pieces falling into place, I was fortunate to get an unexpected invitation to see this beautiful show last night. A heartfelt performance by Sara, and a warm and knowledgeable audience. Manhattan at its best.

Lyrics:

You can have Manhattan
I know it’s for the best
I’ll gather up the avenues
And leave them on your doorstep
And I’ll tip toe away
So you won’t have to say
You heard me leave

You can have Manhattan
I know it’s what you want
The bustle and the buildings
The weather in the fall
And I’ll bow out of place
To save you some space
For somebody new

You can have Manhattan
Cause I can’t have you

Ahhhhh

You can have Manhattan
The one we used to share
The one where we were laughing
And drunk on just being there
Hang on to the reverie
Could you do that for me?
Cause I’m just too sad to

You can have Manhattan
Cause I can’t have you

And so it goes
One foot after the other
Til black and white begin to color in
And I know
That holding us in place
Is simply fear of what’s already changed

Ahhhhh

You can have Manhattan
I’ll settle for the beach
And sunsets facing westward
With sand beneath my feet
I’ll wish this away
Just missing the days
When I was one half of two
You can have Manhattan
Cause I can’t have you

Blue Train – Page & Plant

Led Zeppelin ceased to exist with the untimely death of John Bonham, and few know that Jimmy Page and Robert Plant continued to create beautiful music. I had the chance, and I took it without thinking, to see them in concert, on their 1998 “Walking Into Clarksdale” tour. One of the happiest moments of my life. Back in the days, in Romania, I never dreamed I would see them live, still at the top of their form. True legends of rock and roll.

Lyrics:

Another day is ending
I remember when my world, came falling down
Out there the stars stop dancing
Lost in my darkness now, the rain keeps falling down

Light of my life, where have you gone
Love’s true flame dies, without the warmth of your sun

Here comes the blue train rollin’
Across my heart it crawls, the rain still pouring down
Another day escapes me
A little later maybe, love will roll around

Light of my life, where have you gone
Love’s true flame dies, without the warmth of your sun

I’ve been waiting on a corner
Yeah, I’ve been waiting for a sign now
Oh, I’ve been waiting on the corner
I’ve been waiting for a sign now, oh, now

Light of my life, where have you gone
Love’s true flame dies, without the warmth of your sun

Whistle blowin’, blue train rollin’, carry my heart, my soul, oh, hey
Whistle blowin’, blue train rollin’, carry my darling sun, hey, hey
Whistle blowin’, blue train rollin’, carry my heart

I’ve been waiting on a corner
I’ve been waiting for a sign now
Oh, I’ve been waiting on the corner
I’ve been waiting for a sign, now, oh, ooh

Whistle blowin’, blue train rollin’
Come and carry my, my, my heart now, oh, oh yeah

I’ve been standing on a corner
I’ve been waiting for a sign now
Hear the blue train, hear the blue train, oh
It’s the blue train rolling
