Magic – Olivia Newton-John

Blonde hair, a nice pair of shorts, and high boots to match a nice pair of legs – that’s how I always remembered Olivia. Oh, did I mention a nice voice?
Most of you probably don’t know that, even though she’s considered an Aussie, she was born in England of a Welsh father and a German mother, and her maternal grandfather is none other than Nobel Prize-winning atomic physicist Max Born.

Lyrics:

Come take my hand
You should know me
I’ve always been in your mind
You know that I’ll be kind
I’ll be guiding you

Building your dream
Has to start now
There’s no other road to take
You won’t make a mistake
I’ll be guiding you

You have to believe we are magic
Nothin’ can stand in our way
You have to believe we are magic
Don’t let your aim ever stray
And if all your hopes survive
Your destiny will arrive
I’ll bring all your dreams alive
For you

From where I stand
You are home free
The planets align so rare
There’s promise in the air
And I’m guiding you

Through every turn I’ll be near you
I’ll come anytime you call
I’ll catch you when you fall
I’ll be guiding you

You have to believe we are magic
Nothin’ can stand in our way
You have to believe we are magic
Don’t let your aim ever stray
And if all your hopes survive
Your destiny will arrive
I’ll bring all your dreams alive
For you

Crossroads – Cream

Eric Clapton’s skill level is probably as close as someone might get to guitar perfection, without crossing into the realm of gods. This is a live performance of Crossroads, and unfortunately the camera concentrates more on the other members of the group. Still, one of my favorite blues video clips.

Lyrics:

I went down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees.
Down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees.
Asked the Lord above for mercy, “Save me if you please.”

I went down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride.
Down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride.
Nobody seemed to know me, everybody passed me by.

Well I’m going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side.
Going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side.
You can still barrelhouse, baby, on the riverside.

Going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side.
Going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side.
You can still barrelhouse, baby, on the riverside.

You can run, you can run, tell my friend-boy, Willie Brown.*
Run, you can run, tell my friend-boy, Willie Brown.*
And I’m staying at the crossroads, believe I’m sinking down.

Rasputin – Boney M

A catchy dance song from way, way back. It was common knowledge back then, that it was a song forbidden in Russia and all eastern countries, and we would listen to it as a sort of subversive act, but that might have been an exaggeration.
Boney M was just a front group for the studio recordings of the legendary German producer Frank Farian. When their fame faded, and the disco era came to an end, Frank recycled his act into other successful ventures, like Meat Loaf, Milli Vanilli, Eruption, or La Bouche. A man with an extraordinarily business acumen, and a feel for commercial success.

Lyrics:

There lived a certain man in Russia long ago
He was big and strong, in his eyes a flaming glow
Most people looked at him with terror and with fear
But to Moscow chicks he was such a lovely dear
He could preach the bible like a preacher
Full of ecstacy and fire
But he also was the kind of teacher
Women would desire

RA RA RASPUTIN
Lover of the Russian queen
There was a cat that really was gone
RA RA RASPUTIN
Russia’s greatest love machine
It was a shame how he carried on

He ruled the Russian land and never mind the czar
But the kasachok he danced really wunderbar
In all affairs of state he was the man to please
But he was real great when he had a girl to squeeze
For the queen he was no wheeler dealer
Though she’d heard the things he’d done
She believed he was a holy healer
Who would heal her son

(Spoken:)
But when his drinking and lusting and his hunger
for power became known to more and more people,
the demands to do something about this outrageous
man became louder and louder.

“This man’s just got to go!” declared his enemies
But the ladies begged “Don’t you try to do it, please”
No doubt this Rasputin had lots of hidden charms
Though he was a brute they just fell into his arms
Then one night some men of higher standing
Set a trap, they’re not to blame
“Come to visit us” they kept demanding
And he really came

RA RA RASPUTIN
Lover of the Russian queen
They put some poison into his wine
RA RA RASPUTIN
Russia’s greatest love machine
He drank it all and he said “I feel fine”

RA RA RASPUTIN
Lover of the Russian queen
They didn’t quit, they wanted his head
RA RA RASPUTIN
Russia’s greatest love machine
And so they shot him till he was dead

(Spoken:) Oh, those Russians…

To France – Maggie Reilly & Mike Oldfield

History told in the heavenly voice of Maggie Reilly, what else could you ask for.
Get the entire story here: Mary, Queen of Scots.

Lyrics:

Taking on water,
Sailing a restless sea
From a memory,
A fantasy.
The wind carries
Into white water,
Far from the islands.
Don’t you know you’re
Never going to get to France.
Mary, Queen of Chance,
will they find you?

Never going to get to France.
Could a new romance
ever bind you?
Walking on foreign ground,
Like a shadow,
Roaming in far off
Territory.
Over your shoulder,
Stories unfold, you’re
Searching for sanctuary.
You know you’re
Never going to get to France…

I see a picture
By the lamp’s flicker.
Isn’t it strange how
Dreams fade and shimmer?
Never going to get to France…

I see a picture
By the lamp’s flicker.
Isn’t it strange how
Dreams fade and shimmer?
Never going to get to France…
Never going to get to France.
Never going to…
Never going to get to France.
Never going to…
Never going to get to France.
Never going to…

The Model – Kraftwerk

One of my all time favorite electronic songs. You’ve got to love that German accent. The perfect song to play air-piano at any party.

Lyrics:

She’s a model and she’s looking good
I’d like to take her home that’s understood
She plays hard to get, she smiles from time to time
It only takes a camera to change her mind

She’s going out tonight, loves drinking just champagne
And she has been checking nearly all the men
She’s playing her game and you can hear them say
She is looking good, for beauty we will pay

She’s posing for consumer products now and then
For every camera she gives the best she can
I saw her on the cover of a magazine
Now she’s a big success, I want to meet her again

I Feel Love – Donna Summer

Another song of the disco era. More like the last days of disco, and the first days of techno. The song was produced by a living legend, Giorgio Moroder, and it features the unmistakable sound of a Moog synthesizer. If you were wandering where trance has its roots… What goes around comes around.

Early Minimoog

Lyrics:

Ooh
It’s so good, it’s so good
It’s so good, it’s so good
It’s so good
Ooh
Heaven knows, heaven knows
Heaven knows, heaven knows
Heaven knows
Ooh
I feel love, I feel love
I feel love, I feel love
I feel love

I feel love, I feel love, I feel love

Ooh
Fallin’ free, fallin’ free
Fallin’ free, fallin’ free
Fallin’ free
Ooh
You and me, you and me
You and me, you and me
You and me
Ooh
I feel love, I feel love
I feel love, I feel love
I feel love

I feel love, I feel love, I feel love

Ooh
I’ll get you, I’ll get you
I’ll get you, I’ll get you
I’ll get you
Ooh
What you do, what you do
What you do, what you do
What you do
Ooh
I feel love, I feel love
I feel love, I feel love
I feel love

I feel love, I feel love, I feel love
